Let's talk fashion

Let's pretend that we're just hanging out, without a care in the world.  The laundry is done, the house is clean and we're just sitting around, glass of wine in hand, talking about girl stuff like clothes and shoes and hair - I haven't done that in a while.  Join me, won't you?
Hands in the mouth is optional
So is seeing what other people will look like with your hair.

Speaking of hair, I don't know how natural moms do it!  I'm lucky if I can wash my hair, much less do my standard style.  I just went back and looked at that post and sighed wistfully at how great my hair looked.  These days, the best I can do is wash, detangle with some no-frizz stuff and put it in a ponytail - wet.
My no-frizz stuff.  If you know of something better, please share!

I'm not wildly pleased with my no-frizz stuff because it doesn't make my hair soft.  I don't know if that's because I don't separate the curls like I usually do, or if I'm just not meant to have soft hair, but it's feeling kind of wiry and that makes me sad.

The other thing that bugs me, is that I can't twist it at night anymore.  The baby goes to sleep between nine and ten these days and I usually run around and do dishes and laundry once she's down, and before I go to bed around 11:30.  Twisting my hair is the last thing I want to do, but that means I wake up with a ball of fuzz the next morning and the only thing I can do is put on  a headband and throw it in a bun because hairline fuzz is my pet peeve.

And never mind straight hair.  That is an ordeal.  I have to start straightening it immediately out of the shower so all told, that's a two hour process.  Granted, I can have smooth hair for almost two weeks but finding two solid hours to get 'er done is ridiculously difficult and if I have two hours at my disposal, I kinda want to do other stuff like blog, read blogs, comment on blogs, or SLEEP.

I'm just wondering if I have to just bite the bullet and schedule hair days like I schedule everything else, and you know what babies think of schedules other than their own!  Either way, I'm not cutting it.  It's super easy to throw it in a ponytail or bun and once I do figure out the hair thing, I'll be glad to have hair to fix!

Then there's clothes.  I purged my drawers and my closet is next but it's got me wondering.  Can new moms be stylish without it taking hours or tons of accessories?  AND without turning into a yoga-pants-tank-top woman?  To that end, I'm wondering if there are staple clothing items that make you look pulled together without too much effort.  There's got to be more to life than jeans and a tank top!

And then do you get a few quality (read: expensive) pieces and wear those all the time or do you just hit up Target?  I have some Target flip-flops that have lasted six years but they're nearing the end, which is what got me thinking about all this in the first place.  When replacing them, do I go back to Target or spend the money on a really nice pair that'll look more put together simply because they're nicer (read: more expensive.)  Also, can you own just one pair of extremely versatile shoes that go with day jeans and a tank top as well as night jeans and a tank top?  What's the minimum number of shoes that you have to have and what are they?

Is there a good clothing line or store that has versatile clothes that won't fall apart after one washing?  That's why I don't do Forever 21 or Charlotte Russe or those brands.  Yeah, you can get a shirt for ten bucks but it'll pill and look gross after just one wash!

So is it possible?  Can you look put together with minimal effort and what are the keys?  Is there such a thing as mommy/busy woman chic?
*As I sit here in a cheapie Target dress that's all pill-y and gross, with my fuzzy hair in a bun.  At least I showered!*

  1. Hey girrrrl!!!! (joining you in covo) So, here are a few of my thoughts. How about a few dresses and belts. Dresses are a fav of mine b/c it's one item outfit, at most you can throw on a cardigan and belt and be fabulous! You can wear them with flats or heels or in-betweens. Some good places to get quality clothes w/o breaking the bank..oh poo this box won't let me see what I'm typing so I'mma have to do another comment to finish talking. lOL!

  2. okay, where was I? Try Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft. Cute shirts if you want a t-shirt with some character (i.e. a ruffle here or a flower there or a fun design or bold color). Also, a fun skirt in plain colors that you can toss a fun t-shirt on with and roll/be comfy and cute. Cotton skirts and/or dresses are also cute and can be glammed up with a belt. Dresses with V cuts also make for easy boob access for feeding. I'mma find some examples of what I'm thinking and send you links! :-D

  3. Ooooh I like this post. I want to see what people say. And those pics are hilarious. I wonder what her hair will be like? Since I have a "seasonal" job (teaching), there is a whole 12 week period when I don't have to really look put together. So I do sometimes become the yoga pants-tank top woman. More often, though, the comfy skirt or dress wearer. That is how I solve all my problems (matching tops to pants, being too hot, things not fitting correctly)-- dresses and skirts! Flowy, casual skirts. What's funny is that I will literally throw on one with flip flops and go meet friends for lunch. These friends who are on their lunch hour from work, who took lots of time to put together a matching uncomfortable outfit, and they'll look at me and say "Oh, aren't you all dressed up today?!" If they only knew how little effort is requires. My closet is full of summer dresses from Target to the Banana Republic sale rack. They can go from the grocery store to dinner, just throw on a pretty necklace and change out of the flip flops:o)

And speaking of flip flops, I would never spend more $ on a pair of them because to others, they all look the same. They look casual and I don't think a more $$ pair will change the outfit at all. Save your pennies and maybe get a different style of shoe...like espadrilles or ballet flats. My silver Old Navy ones have lasted forever and match everything, so I wear them all the time, unless more "dressy" attire is required! Personally (for summer), I need casual black and brown, more formal black and brown/neutral, and something to wear with white (metallic, natural fiber, etc). Then I have a bunch of colorful Puma flats, tennis shoes, and flip flops because I love colorful shoes!

  7. Ooooh this is a good one... especially since it is hard to even get a bath!

Hair. If it is something complicated, I try to do it when daddy is home so that he can wash her. If he isn't then I do it small doses. Something that should take an hour, takes an hour but at least it gets done. I'm pretty much sticking to braid outs and twist outs for the summer since they last long. Braid outs don't take long and they can last a few days. For twist outs, I can wear them in twists for a few days then take them down for a few days.

I purged my closet on Sunday! My friends voted stufff out the closet Sex and the City style... plus baby. This summer, I mostly wear dresses and flat sandals. I look pulled together with little effort. When my legs aren't shaved and my toe nails look REALLY bad. I wear jeans, a flowy top and ballet flats.

  8. Oh yeah, maybe if you try a cream or oil under your frizz ease it will be less crunchy

  9. I was totally going to buy this dress right this second but it's sold out!
I love the idea of dresses though!

  10. See, I need more flowy tops. I'm totally guilty of buying one style in
every color, so I have tank tops in every color of the rainbow. I'm liking
this dress idea - I've never worn dresses because I got stuck in a jeans rut
    but they are easy!

Braid outs don't work for me - not tight enough and twist outs only last if
I re-twist every single night and that's a little much for me right now.

Maybe I'll do my closet tonight after the baby's asleep, since Drew is out
of town and won't be bothered by the mess I'll most assuredly make!

  11. I have Moroccan Oil and I was doing it the other way around - cream then
oil, when I had time to do both. I'll switch it up and see what happens. I
    just found this too:

    I'm very intrigued.

  12. I'm dying to see how her hair will turn out! It curls up a little when its
wet but falls stick straight again when dry.

I've always like Ann Taylor Loft but for whatever reason I've just never
gotten anything from there. I'm going to have to check them out and I'm
    loving the idea of dresses!

  13. oh boo!!! They may have some in store (mommy daughter mall trip?!!) But I'll keep my eye out for great deals and let you know!!! You're singing to my favorite tune--shopping, clothes & cute dresses!!!

  14. I could really use some help on this front too. I am frightened to clean out my closet because I think/hope that I'll be able to wear lots of that stuff again, someday. It is a tad sad that all those "dry clean only" clothes are pretty much a no-go for quite a while.

I have a long flowy skirt that makes me feel put together even when I wear it with t-shirts and sandals. Since it is long (below my knees) I can still get on the floor and do all the mommy things that I like to do, but it makes me feel pretty. Something like that would go well with all of your tank tops. (BTW, you look really really good. I'd be wearing tank tops all the time if I looked like you do.)

  15. this reminds me I am a fan of maxi dresses. you can go w/o shaving your legs longer! :-)

  16. My typical outfit is cute jeans, a tank top or t shirt in a fun color, and some cool earrings. Or a scarf if it's not hot. Big necklaces are fun too. As for locations - Target has some great t-shirts, and so does Gap!!! For more "nice" sandals... check out American Eagle. I know it's a teeny bopper store, but they have cute leather flip flops for not too much $! Actually... check out their clothes in general. They have comfy jeans for cheap, and their shirts have a cute, beachy, fun vibe. Their jewelry is cute too!!! :) For some cute dresses, I would try Old Navy. They have super cute skirts and dresses during the summer!

Whoa. Apparently you get me talking about shopping, and I can't shut up! hahahahhaha

  17. Hair: Been hearing good things about Shea Moisture. Haven't tried it; still holding on to Teri's method. Also, even if you toss your hair in a bun before bed, try putting a satin scarf over your pillowcase. Your hair will at least be smooth around the hairline and you won't have to fight it as much.

Clothes: Ann Taylor Loft (like others said), Banana Republic...then get you some dresses! Enjoy that Texas weather. I was guilty like you of buying one style in every color. Don't let them have a buy 1 get 1 half off shirt sale, I'd be like GIVE ME ALL OF THEM. Then I figured out my colors (which is why I wanna feature you on the color blog) and started only buying stuff in my colors which gets rid of impulse shopping for not-so-quality stuff, etc.

Francesca's Collections (online) has a lot of cute, casual dresses for summer (so basically, through October). I'll raid my bookmarks and see what else I have.

OMG I saw a flash of Drew in the first photo with Sofia! I love her eyes.

  18. I know what your talking about. Our oldest baby is 10 yrs old -- and we just welcomed his little brother three weeks ago. Boy did I FORGET how much work taking care of a little one and yourself can be!!

I so know what your talking about when it comes to hair, my entire pregnancy I just threw it in a pony I had zero energy or patience to do my hair while prego. Now with out little guy here and no hair cuts in forever my hairs gotten crazy long -- I've decided to wear it curly for 2 weeks then 2 weeks straight. And yes I'm making 'me' at home hair appts lol -- I just flat ironed my hair two loving it! I love my hair curly too - but it angles so easy, it stressful. Oh i was just talkng to a GF about my hair, she said I should wait at least 6+ mos before cutting my hair until all my hormones level back out. So wait a few more months or longer before cutting!!

Anyways maybe the two weeks on and two weeks off will help. As for clothes I love target for a few items, and old navy for summer Maxi's and Marshall's for shoes! OMG they have a great selection of shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I forgot about Marshall's! They do have cute shoes! Sounds like dresses are
    the way to go...

I may try at home hair appts. I could do every two weeks...

Please excuse the brevity, sent from my phone.

  20. Please don''t turn to me for fashion advice! I feel really hopeless and clueless in this area. (Same with how to wear makeup--I feel like I missed out on these "girly" things and still feel like a 7th grader trying on makeup for the first time). So anyway, I wear knee-length A-line skirts in warm and hot weather, almost exclusively. I just bought a maxi dress at H&M and really like that, too. Most of my wardrobe is whatever I can find at a thrift store, so it definitely is all over the place. I also live in a smallish town with absolutely no clothes stores (well, we have a Walmart but that definitely does not count!). So unless I want to drive 45+ minutes, I can't shop for clothes.

Now that my hair is longer, I always put it up in a ponytail. I'd like to have something more stylish and interesting, but I haven't been able to find anyone in town that can actually do the hair cut I want...so ponytail it is.

  21. Yeah well, substitute Target for thrift stores and that's me. I wish I could
find cute stuff at thrift stores and make it over with my sewing machine but
I'm too chicken, thus I'm the tank top and yoga pants girl!

  22. Skinny jeans with a tank (boob acess) and cardi and a cute flat in a cool color, maxi dress with cardi or skirt with tank and cardi gladiator sandals, jeans & tees or tanks. No matter what you still look super cute.

Paul Mitchell has a good curly product, and Quidad. I'm still searching for products I love. For cute twist that don't take all day try three flat twist. After detangled part hair down center which ever side you like your hair to hang flat twist half the hair on the side (twist 1) same side in the back flat twist going down the back (twist 2) and on the remaining side do a flat twist from crown to root (twist 3) or break it up and do two twist for a total of four, and call it a night.

  23. I haven't read any other comments so forgive me if I repeat anything said. For me, the only thing that made me feel pulled together after Jasmine were dressed. I have a good 15 dresses in my rotation. I wear at least 3 a week. Most of them came from old navy( in store and online) I love their dresses. They are so comfortable and just easy to dress up or down (depending on shoes). I have also found nice dresses at Ross.

Now my hair, well I'm getting tired of it. If it wasn't for my alopecia i'd probably cut it all off and start from scratch. I found a good leave in that leaves my hair extra soft and defines my curls very nicely. Its called "mega growth break free by Profective". I also sleep in a silk scarf. Need to go buy jas and I some silk pillow cases from Anna's.

  24. I think Target is great for clothes.. .Also Old Navy, JC Penny, Dillards, Macy's... stay on the clearance racks.. Maxi dresses are a staple! You can put them on and wear them ANYWHERE and look like you put in a bunch of effort and really didn't.

  25. i'm so tardy for the party...dresses and skirts have become my staple item post baby. none of my button down shirts would fit while i was still breastfeeding and i since i still have a little ways to go to get back to my pre-baby weight, some of my pants are still a bit snug.

dresses are so forgiving and still look flattering. i tend to prefer calvin klein and any type of shift dress. marshalls always has great prices on dresses.

as for the hairline fuzz, i use a method that i learned on curlynikki.com: at night, smooth your leave in conditioner around the edges and tie your hair down flat with a scarf. they'll be flat and smooth in the a.m.

p.s. Sophia is so cute in the pictures. I love her little round tummy!

  26. sorry! i know her name is spelled "Sofia"! :)

among those who are supposed to know!
